Why I Write

Why I Write

Of course I write to make money. But the idea is to make the cash necessary to help the stray cats in my area and foster them when we can. We come across kittens all the time (and are currently fostering two of them).

For some background to this: We live in the inner city of a slowly dying city, Racine, Wisconsin. Moving into our home in the slums, we found out fast that one of the major sports here was dog fighting. Working with the Parks department and the police, we were able to put an end to this (at least in the park below our home). The monsters’ running this ring were up to the triple act: Stealing pets to use as bait to train dogs, shooting dogs that lost and simply letting them go when they had no more use for them (because of injury or age). We got real tired of having to call about another injured or dying animal.

At least we were able to stop this by our house.

An issue that still goes on here though is when a kitten or a puppy is no longer cute, the owner gets bored of taking care of it and just tosses it outside. Because of this we have a lot of stray cats and a few dogs in the area. The city is good at getting the dogs off the streets and into the new shelter that’s gone up. They’re not so good with taking care of the cats.

I know I can’t change the world but I am sure that I can do something for the cats.

The Gun Moll and I have built two cat houses (still need red lights) filled with straw for the outside strays, as well as two beds for them in the wind break that our front door creates. We feed them cat food and treat them with dewormer when we can. There’s not much more we can do but when we do find young kittens we have been very lucky in our ability to foster them. In a perfect world we would run a spay and release program but sadly we can’t afford that. Yes, the world is a cruel place and most of the outside strays only last a year or two. It is what it is but we have done everything that is in our power to do.

It is nice that the books I have written are able to help pay for the cats, something that being on a fixed income would not allow us to do.

I just wanted to take the time to tell you about why I write and how it helps greatly in our efforts looking after these poor creatures.

Thanks!

Narco Saints and Santa Muerte

I typically stick to stuff dealing with the mob (with a healthy dose of conspiracy theory thrown in) but I would be remiss if I didn’t use this platform to educate and correct misconceptions whenever possible. As you know, in the book Narco Saints we use Santa Muerte as a plot device (though some might say a character). Either way, she plays a major role.

My interest in Santa Muerte goes back to my days as a volunteer for the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce for S.E Wisconsin which I was V.P for about a year. I helped many from Mexico and Central America to get ESL classes, start small businesses and navigate City Hall. In doing so, I got to hear stories about life in Mexico and why individuals wanted to live in Wisconsin. I also heard what I can only describe as horror stories about dealing with the corrupt government and the Cartels.

Over time I was invited to many meals and gatherings and I got to learn more. Way more. The most intriguing thing I learned was the truth about Santa Muerte vs what the media and entertainment had to say.

When I met Dr. Kate Kingsbury on Twitter, I found out about her research and I knew I needed to help her with her GoFundMe campaign she was running for her book. While I could offer a donation, I knew this wasn’t enough. That’s why I have decided to pledge 10% of the sales from my book Nacro Saints to her campaign (including the upcoming audiobook and t-shirt sales). To me, this will help to educate us all on the Santa Muerte far more than a brief and misguided reference in the odd television program.

Narcosantos

Made Men Productions is happy to announce a new joint effort with Goodfella Productions on the machinima, Narcosantos (Narco Saints)

Wayne Clingman of WI based Made Men Production announced today that his company has launched a joint effort with Goodfella Productions, Glasgow Scotland, on a Machinima take on the world of the Cartels in Mexico and the U.S.A. Machinima being the art of filmmaking from inside a game system.

Wayne spoke out about how “far too little is told of how the world of the Cartels is having an influence on both sides of the border.” He believes that it’s “a story that must start being told.”

Mr. Richard Reid of Goodfella Productions included, “knowing that this story is a break out, I feel that a machinima based on the GTA game platform is the best way to engage both an English speaking and Hispanic world in a short form way that can be consumed on a mobile device. Few, damn few if any, are combining this technology to reach out to tell the stories we have in store.”

Mr. Clingman went on to say, “to see the work that Richard Reid has done with Goodfella Productions and machinima opened up my eyes to fantastic possibilities in creative story telling.”

The project, Narcosantos, tells of two hard men, both of them killers, trying to find redemption in whatever form it takes in a world gone mad. Does good still exist or is just all different shades of evil?
